Ty Simpson was a five-star recruit out of Westview High School. During his senior season, he earned Tennessee Gatorade Player of the Year honors after leading his team to a state championship. Simpson later committed to play his college football at the University of Alabama.

In college, Simpson had to wait his turn, sitting behind Bryce Young and Jalen Milroe before finally getting his opportunity in 2025. Despite operating with limited offensive talent around him, Simpson performed well and still managed to earn semifinalist honors for multiple quarterback awards. He got off to a fast start over his first eight games, posting an impressive 20:1 touchdown-to-interception ratio. However, his production regressed over his final seven games, including the playoffs, finishing that stretch with an 8:4 ratio. In his final three high-level matchups, Simpson averaged just 170 passing yards and one touchdown per game.

Rookie Profile | Strengths and Weaknesses

Ty Simpson is a raw prospect due to his limited experience, but the film shows flashes of intriguing traits. He does a good job escaping pressure and extending plays when the pocket collapses, and his pocket awareness stands out as one of his best qualities. Simpson has a solid, quick release and is comfortable operating within structure. If he lands in a high-tempo offense, he’ll have an opportunity to make plays. Overall, he profiles as more of a timing-based quarterback than a pure off-script creator.

Simpson is a prospect who comes with more red flags than you’d ideally want. His play is very inconsistent—at times he looks capable of moving the ball efficiently down the field, but too often he stares down his primary target and is late on his throws. Once his first or second read is taken away, the play frequently begins to break down.

His deep-ball accuracy is a major concern, as he rarely connects consistently downfield, and he lacks the arm strength to be a true vertical threat at the NFL level. Ball placement outside the hashes is also worrisome. Simpson will need a patient coaching staff and multiple years of development to have a chance to succeed in the NFL.

The best-case outcome is a Baker Mayfield–type quarterback, while the lower-end projection mirrors Tua Tagovailoa with slightly more mobility but fewer refined passing traits.

Ty Simpson | All-22 Film Breakdowns

One of the greatest benefits of a Nerd Herd subscription is access to our All-22 Film Room, where you can study prospects like Ty Simpson for yourself.

On the first throw shown, Simpson displays a quick release on a timing slant across the middle of the field. This is an area where he consistently excels. On the next play, however, you see some of the inconsistency that shows up on his downfield throws. He places the ball high, which works in this instance, but it creates a dangerous situation for the receiver.

The final throw gives a glimpse of what Simpson looks like when he’s fully locked in, delivering an excellent outside throw downfield with proper timing and placement. Despite the red flags, Simpson has shown enough high-level traits on film to keep evaluators interested.

Draft Capital | Potential Landing Spots

I could see Ty Simpson falling into Day 3 of the upcoming NFL Draft, which is where I ultimately expect him to land. While it’s possible a team could fall in love with his traits and take him as early as Round 2, that outcome feels less likely given his inconsistencies and developmental needs.

Simpson will need time to sit and learn behind a veteran quarterback before he’s ready to see the field at the NFL level. If Matthew Stafford returns next season, the Los Angeles Rams could be a solid landing spot—allowing Simpson to develop for a year in a structured offense with experienced coaching before being asked to compete for a starting role.
