The 2022 college football season has not been a great stretch for the Stanford Cardinal. But are things really that bad for an otherwise noteworthy program that they’re resorting to giving away free tickets to home games?
They’re not coming out and outright admitting it. Again, Stanford is a proud program, after all.
Still, this 3-4 (1-4 Pac-12) season seems to have taken a hit on fan engagement for the Cardinal. Stewart Mandel of Sports Illustrated passed on an apparent email from Stanford, marketing a “free trial” for tickets to the Cardinal’s final two home games of the season.
“Starting today, you can test drive seats for the 2023 season, for FREE,” the messaging reads. “Decide that next year’s plan isn’t right for you. No sweat; you can cancel anytime this year. It’s truly a free trial for the 2022 season.”
Kudos to the person in marketing who decided to market this as a “test drive” rather than just straight up coming out and saying that attendance has been down and “we need people to fill these seats.”
