Stanford fired men’s basketball coach Jerod Haase on Thursday after eight seasons, athletic director Bernard Muir announced.
“While the on-court results fell short of our expectations, Coach Haase led our men’s basketball program with great integrity and made a deeply positive impact on many Cardinal student-athletes,” Muir said in a release. “As we embark on the search for our next head coach, I wish Jerod and his family all the best in the future.”
Haase took over the job in the spring of 2016, leading the Cardinals to a 126-127 record during his time at the helm. Stanford never made it to the NCAA Tournament and only finished .500 or better four times during Haase’s tenure.
Picked eighth in the Pac-12 in the preseason this year, Stanford finished in a three-way tie for ninth, going 14-17 overall and 8-12 in conference play. The Cardinal snapped a six-game losing streak in their regular-season finale against California on Thursday.
Stanford beat Cal 87-76 in the opening round of the Pac-12 tournament Wednesday.
Haase’s best season was 2019-20 when his team earned 20 wins. The Cardinal, at 20-12, were poised as a bubble team before the Pac-12 tournament was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Despite the challenges in Palo Alto, Haase secured 10 of Stanford’s top 24 recruits in program history, including NBA draft picks Ziaire Williams, Tyrell Terry and KZ Okpala.
