Kevin Durant might have San Antonio circled on his wish list, but that doesn’t mean the Spurs are sprinting to the trade table.
The Spurs have “had a level of interest” in the two-time Finals MVP but “have not been the aggressive team” in talks with the Suns, according to Shams Charania.
“I think they’re really going to be stocking their assets for potentially a bigger move, bigger player, someone that may fit their timeline,” Charania said on The Pat McAfee Show.
That’s not to say they’re out. Shams made that much clear.
“They want to have a similar run and be set up similarly to [former Spurs general manager and current team CEO] R.C. Buford and Gregg Popovich,” Charania said. “And, in their minds, they have a ton of assets to where, if there’s a guy that becomes available that’s on that timeline, potentially you go out and make that deal. That’s not to say that they don’t have interest in Kevin Durant. They do. And potentially they would make an offer, and I’m sure they have discussed different frameworks, but what the other teams are offering is just a little bit more aggressive.”
The Spurs are in the middle of building something real. They’ve got Victor Wembanyama, a generational talent. De’Aaron Fox is in his prime at 27. Stephon Castle just won Rookie of the Year. Plus, they’re armed with the No. 2 and No. 14 picks in this year’s draft.
Durant’s still elite, averaging 26.6 points, six boards, and 4.2 assists last season. But for the Spurs, it’s not just about talent. It’s about timing.
And right now, it seems they’re holding their assets close to the chest.
