South Carolina's 100-yard opening kickoff for TD kickstarts win over Texas A&M

Texas A&M’s season got off to an ugly start with their Week 2 loss at home against Appalachian State. South Carolina wide receiver Xavier Legette made sure Saturday night’s start was even uglier.

Already failing preseason expectations to contend for the College Football Playoff, the Aggies face an uphill climb to qualify for the Gasparilla Bowl.

Texas A&M (3-4, 1-3 in SEC) has now lost three games in a row. The Aggies had a bye week after their crushing loss to No. 6 Alabama on Oct. 8, but the extra time didn’t seem to refresh them. They got off to a disastrous start, with South Carolina returning the opening kick for a touchdown and Texas A&M turning the ball over on their first two possessions. The Aggies trailed 17-0 with just over five minutes off the clock.

It isn’t pretty in College Station, with the team’s two wins against FBS competition coming by 10 points against Arkansas (4-3, 1-3 in SEC) and Miami (FL) (3-4, 1-2 in ACC). The offense has consistently gotten off to uninspiring starts. They haven’t scored an opening drive touchdown and have only 20 first-quarter points through their first seven games, failing to score in four.

Texas A&M’s loss was its first to South Carolina (5-2, 2-2 in SEC) in program history. With the losses piling up, Fisher’s 10-year, $75M contract looks more and more like the costliest mistake in college football.
