After getting washed out Tuesday, the Atlanta Braves and St. Louis Cardinals will wrap up a three-game series Wednesday with a split doubleheader. The first game will get underway at 1:45 p.m. ET with the second game scheduled to start at 7:15 p.m. ET.
Reynaldo López will get the start for the Braves in the early game and will be looking to continue his strong start to the season. Through 13 starts, Lopez has a 1.57 ERA which would lead the majors if he had enough innings to qualify. He is coming off a start where he allowed seven hits and a walk but still managed to keep the Tigers off the scoreboard for five innings. Lopez hasn’t allowed a run in either of his last two starts (11 innings) and has 14 strikeouts and just two walks over that span.
The Cardinals will stick with Tuesday’s scheduled starter Kyle Gibson to start the early game Wednesday. Gibson last started on June 14 where he limited the Cubs to two hits over seven scoreless innings. He was scratched from his next start due to back tightness.
The Braves will start Bryce Elder in the second game instead of Chris Sale. Despite originally announcing Sale as Wednesday’s starter, the AJC’s Justin Toscano reported Wednesday that Atlanta was already planning to start Elder Wednesday before the rain out. Atlanta will travel to Chicago Wednesday night and play a make up game against the White Sox Thursday afternoon before returning home.
Elder last pitched in the majors on May 19 where he allowed six runs in three innings against the Padres. He has a 6.46 ERA and a 5.39 FIP across five starts and 23 2⁄3 innings this season. Elder posted a 2.77 ERA in four starts at Gwinnett in June.
The Cardinals haven’t announced their plans for the second game of the twin bill. Andre Pallante was originally scheduled to start and will still likely figure into the mix as the starter or a bulk guy in a bullpen game.
Atlanta’s offense was held in check for most of Monday’s 4-3 loss before rallying late. Austin Riley hit his eighth home run of the season in the fifth inning. The Braves had several balls seemingly die at the warning track, including what would have been a game-tying homer by Ozzie Albies in the eighth inning.
Orlando Arcia left Monday’s game due to dizziness and was not in Tuesday’s lineup before the rainout. Brian Snitker said that Arcia still wasn’t feeling great and had been to the hospital to get checked out, but everything had come back normal. The Braves recalled infielder Luke Williams to the active roster and placed Brian Anderson on the 10-day injured list with a bacterial infection. Zack Short will start at shortstop until Arcia is ready to return and Williams gives them another infield option if needed.
