Jake Retzlaff has committed to a new school after he was suspended by BYU.
Retzlaff had been facing a seven-game suspension for violating BYU’s Honor Code after a woman made troubling allegations against the quarterback in a civil lawsuit. Retzlaff denied the allegations but admitted to having consensual sex with the reported victim, which in itself is against the rules of BYU’s Honor Code.
On Monday, ESPN’s Pete Thamel reported that Retzlaff is planning to enroll at Tulane as a walk-on. Retzlaff is expected to compete for a starting job in training camp after Tulane’s Title IX office investigated the allegations against him.
The lawsuit against Retzlaff was dismissed on June 30, with both parties agreeing to dismiss with prejudice. There were reports that BYU planned to suspend Retzlaff for seven games, which led to the junior withdrawing from the school.
Because he withdrew from BYU, Retzlaff was not subject to the restrictions of the transfer portal. He was able to simply leave BYU and walk on with another program. His suspension was also from BYU and not the NCAA, which means he will be eligible to play right away at Tulane.
Former Tulane quarterback Darian Mensah transferred to Duke after leading the Green Wave to the AAC Championship Game last season. Tulane then landed former LSU and Auburn quarterback T.J. Finley via the transfer portal, but he was arrested in April.
Retzlaff led BYU to an 11-2 record last season. He completed 57.9% of his passes for 2,947 yards, 20 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.
