The Rays fell to the Yankees 5-3 on Friday to fall to 11-10 on the season.
Starter Tyler Alexander recorded 5 1⁄3 shutout innings allowing just two hits while striking out four in the loss
Outfielder Richie Palacios also had a premiere performance, recording two hits, two runs, and an RBI on the day. This included a solo home run to break the scoreless tie and put the Rays up 1-0.
The 1-0 lead would not last long however, as the Yankees would explode in the seventh for five runs to take a monstrous lead late in the game.
The inning would start to get out of hand when Oswaldo Cabrera would reach first on a fielding error, leading Alex Verdugo to come in to score.
An Anthony Volpe single would quickly break the tie and give the Yankees their first lead of the game.
The game would officially get out of hand for Tamp Bay when Juan Soto came up in the next at bat and crushed a three run home run to give the Yankees a 5-3 lead.
The Rays weren’t giving up though, with an Isaac Paredes single scoring both Palacios and Randy Arozarena to make it 5-3,
The Rays would once again threaten to score in the top of the ninth with two men on and nobody out, however a bizarre fielders choice and an unlucky double play would seal the fate of the Rays and end the game in a 5-3 loss.
The 5-3 loss is the first game the Rays have played against the Yankees this season, as they are set to face them Saturday and Sunday to complete the three game series.
First pitch for Saturdays game is set for 1:05 as the Rays look to turn those hits into runs.
