Luka Doncic has taken the offseason seriously, and according to a new report, it’s already paying off.
Doncic, who was traded from the Dallas Mavericks to the Lakers back in February, appears to be embracing the fresh start in Hollywood.
After months of criticism surrounding his conditioning, the Lakers guard has reportedly shed significant weight while committing to a strict regimen focused on his body and overall fitness.
“Doncic has been incredibly committed to his conditioning this offseason,” wrote The Athletic’s Dan Woike. “He’s dropped significant weight and is working on strict diet and cardio training, according to a source with knowledge of the plan. In a shift from his normal offseason, he spent a month away from on-court work to focus more on his body. Doncic has looked visibly slimmer in photos and is now back working out with Slovenia readying for EuroBasket competition later this summer.”
The change in approach could be a turning point for the Slovenian star.
Despite battling fatigue and criticism over his fitness last season, Doncic still managed to average 28.2 points, 8.2 rebounds, and 7.7 assists between his time with the Mavericks and Lakers.
The Lakers were 18-10 in the 28 regular-season games that he played. But the physical toll showed during the 2024 NBA Finals, where Doncic looked worn down and uncharacteristically turnover-prone as Dallas fell short.
By prioritising his body early this offseason, Doncic could be gearing up for a more consistent and durable campaign in 2025–26. A leaner frame could also help him improve defensively and reduce his turnover rate, two areas that have long been sticking points in his game.
Whether this transformation leads to another leap on the court remains to be seen. But Luka Doncic is putting in the work now, and the rest of the league should take notice.
