Kirk Ferentz apologizes for criticizing reporter

Iowa football head coach Kirk Ferentz was clearly having a bad day, even if he tried to play it off as being hashtag blessed. He took some hard questions about the historically bad offense run by his son, offensive coordinator Brian Ferentz, and the hard line of questioning from one reporter, specifically, apparently ruffled his feathers.

Ferentz is now apologizing to that reporter, Doug Lesmerises, who covers the Ohio State Buckeyes. Lesmerises asked Ferentz why he was comfortable making a change at quarterback to try to get his offense going but he won’t change the offensive coordinator (again, his son) who’s in charge of the whole messy affair. Ferentz answered Lesmerises’ question, but two days later when back in Iowa City, he threw some shade at the OSU reporter for his “interrogation.” In fact, Ferentz more than threw shade. He completely mocked Lesmerises, and potentially every reporter in the room depending on how they took the comments.

“I complimented the guys on Sunday because during the questioning, in some cases interrogation, on Saturday that I experienced and the one good thing about that it dawned on me coming home. I said as bad as today was, it could have been worse because I could have been that guy,” Ferentz said at a press conference. “I could have been that guy. Had his job and had to act like he did.”

Again, all Lesmerises did was ask the head coach a tough question. There was nothing mean or malicious about it. In fact, if you know anything about the Iowa football program or know any Hawkeyes fans, they’ve been asking themselves the same question as well.

The offense is literally the worst in college football. Why not move on from Brian Ferentz?

Given a few days to think about his response, the elder Ferentz clearly came to his senses and issued an apology to both the reporter who he mocked as well as the beat writer profession in general.
