Ian Mejia wins Southern League Pitcher of the Month

Atlanta Braves prospect Ian Mejia had about as good of a month as a pitcher can have, making four appearances for the Mississippi Braves and not allowing a single run. After this run of dominance Mejia was honored by the Southern League as their pitcher of the month for May.

Mejia didn’t enter the season as one of Battery Power’s top 30 prospects, but he has done everything in his power to prove he belongs with that group. Mejia has improved his play in every facet, and opened his month up with seven scoreless innings against Pensacola to lead Mississippi to a win. A week later he tied his season high with nine strikeouts, going 5 23 against the Rocket City Trash Pandas to earn his second of four wins. However it was his May 17th start that was the highlight, and it was apparent early in the start Mejia was in for a special evening. He struck out the side in the first inning then struck out two of three in the second, and would go on to strike out a career-high 11 batters. After four innings of no-hit ball it started to sink in that the chase was on, and with the game being a double header of only seven innings he was able to complete just the second individual no-hitter in Mississippi Braves history. He had a single unsuccessful start with Gwinnett before coming back down to Mississippi and throwing seven scoreless innings for the third time in four Double-A starts.
