How Fox Sports is looking to own weekend ratings via Friday football

According to a report from Andrew Marchand of “The Athletic”, Fox Sports is planning on making Friday night a destination for a big-time college football game.

Saturday’s are already all college football, all the time, in the fall, but Marchand’s reporting makes it clear that the network is aiming to take full control of the weekend ratings via football games. That’s part of the reason Fox did not renew the rights for WWE’s “Friday Night Smackdown”

“Fox’s goal is to have the No. 1 college football game on Fridays and Saturdays and then the top-rated NFL contests on Sunday afternoons, Marchand reported, citing Fox president of insight and analytics Michael Mulvihill. The extension of college football into a regular Friday prime-time broadcast means that in the fall, the top NFL and college games will be featured every night of the week except Tuesday and Wednesday.”

The Friday night schedule has not yet been released but Fox Sports intends to pull the best matchup weekly out of the Big Ten, Big 12 or Mountain West.
