Former Florida star forward Keyontae Johnson has committed to Kansas State, he announced on social media Saturday.
Johnson, who hasn’t played in two years after collapsing during a game due to a heart issue, has been cleared to play by medical personnel. As a sophomore, he averaged 14 points and 7.1 rebounds per game.
He last played for Florida on Dec. 12, 2020, when he collapsed at Florida State. Johnson was hospitalized for eight days and placed in a medically induced coma.
The forward entered his name into the NCAA transfer portal in May and visited Kansas State’s campus in late July. Johnson narrowed his options to KSU, Memphis, Nebraska and Western Kentucky.
Kansas State landed former Baylor assistant coach Jerome Tang as its head coach this offseason.
This is a huge addition for Kansas State if Johnson is able to be as productive as he was at Florida. The Wildcats needed a proven wing scorer, and Johnson was one of the best wings in the SEC the last time we saw him. Tang’s goal is to make an NCAA Tournament in his first year, and he has a much better shot now with a player the caliber of Johnson joining his program.
