University of Florida football fans are buzzing with excitement over freshman quarterback DJ Lagway headed into spring football practices.
Lagway, a five-star recruit out of Willis (Texas) High School, became a trending topic on X on Wednesday when Florida released its spring roster and Lagway clocked in at 6-foot-3 and 241 pounds.
Florida begins spring practice on Thursday, with the spring game scheduled for April 13 in Gainesville.
Fans might have to wait until 2025 to see Lagway as the starter, however, as incumbent starter Graham Mertz is returning for a final season.
Lagway was named the National Gatorade Player of the Year and National MaxPreps Player of the Year after he threw for 4,604 yards and 58 touchdowns as a senior in 2023. Lagway picked Florida over a final group of schools that included Miami, Georgia, Clemson, Alabama and LSU. He was an early enrollee in January.
While Lagway is far and away the best recruit to come to Florida under Napier, he might not be there for Lagway’s entire career. Napier is on the hot seat heading into his third season after back-to-back losing seasons in his first two years, going 6-7 in 2022 and 5-7 in 2023.
