Braves select Nick Montgomery with their 5th round pick in the 2024 MLB Draft

With their 5th round pick in the 2024 MLB Draft, the Atlanta Braves selected Nick Montgomery, a catcher out of Cypress HS (CA).

Montgomery represents the first bat the Braves selected in the 2024 MLB Draft, a catcher known for his bat – particularly his power. He may have some questions about where he ends up, but he’s being drafted for the bat.

Introducing Nick Montgomery

Nick Montgomery is a big 6’4”, 210-pound catching prospect from Cypress HS that is committed to Arizona State. The first thing about Montgomery that scouts notice is the big raw power, which should grade out as a plus tool. While he has some feel for hitting, there will need to be some changes to his swing mechanics to really maximize what he is able to do. The defense is a work in progress still, which is normal with prep catchers, but he has enough speed to be an option in the corner outfield and enough power to be an option at first base as well.

First Reaction

This is an upside pick where the team is betting on a big kid with big power to hit. The catching may or may not come, but he’s got the bat to make that not important in the long run. Montgomery is arguably the best catching prospect in the system behind Drake Baldwin from the moment he signs and has special upside if he is able to bring that offense behind the plate.
