Braves recall Darius Vines, option Jimmy Herget to Gwinnett

The Atlanta Braves are adding a fresh arm to the bullpen ahead of Monday’s series opener against the Milwaukee Brewers. The team announced Monday morning that they have recalled right-hander Darius Vines to the active roster. Reliever Jimmy Herget was optioned to Gwinnett as the corresponding move.

This will be Vines’ third stint on the active roster this season. He made two appearances in April and then another on May 24. Overall, the numbers are ugly as he has allowed 17 hits and 11 runs in just 12 23 innings across his three appearances. Vines has made 14 starts at Gwinnett where he has a 5.14 ERA and a 5.44 FIP in 77 innings.

The move was necessary after Atlanta’s bullpen had to cover the final six innings of Sunday’s game in New York. Reynaldo López left that game after three innings due to forearm soreness. He was set to undergo an MRI Sunday night and the Braves still have not announced the results.

Herget was reinstated from the injured list on Saturday and pitched the final two innings of Sunday’s win. He wouldn’t have been available for Monday’s game after throwing 30 pitches.
