Braves rally late for a 5-3 win over the Marlins

The Atlanta Braves battled back from a 3-0 deficit to secure a 5-3 win over the Miami Marlins.

Schwellenbach’s evening got off to a rough start as Xavier Edwards singled to begin the game and then stole second. Schwellenbach struck out Jake Burger and got Jesus Sanchez to ground out. However, Jonah Bride got a hold of a 3-1 fastball and sent it into the left field seats for a two-run homer to put Miami in front 2-0.

Schwellenbach settled in and struck out two in a perfect second. In the third, he struck out Edwards to begin the inning. However, Burger followed with a homer to left to push Miami’s lead to 3-0. Sanchez followed with a single, but Schwellenbach struck out Bride and Kyle Stowers to end the inning.

Schwellenbach allowed a two-out single to Emmanuel Rivera but nothing else in a scoreless fourth. He retired the side in order in the fifth and notched his eighth strikeout.

The Braves’ offense struggled throughout the first four innings against Valente Ballozo as they were hitless heading into the bottom of the fifth. That was until Orlando Arcia began the inning with a solo homer into the Braves’ bullpen to put the score at 3-1 as he extended his hit streak to 13 games.

Schwellenbach continued his good work in the sixth notching another strikeout in a perfect frame. Atlanta’s offense got back to work in the home half of the sixth. Whit Merrifield led off the inning with a triple to right. That would chase Bellozo from the game as Skip Schumacher summoned Anthony Bender from the bullpen. Jorge Soler would go down swinging for the first out of the inning. The following at-bat, Austin Riley then sent a grounder to second that scored Merrifield to cut the deficit to 3-2.

Schwellenbach came back out for the seventh and recorded his 10th strikeout of the game in another perfect inning. The Braves got the tying run on in the seventh as Arcia worked a one-out walk. However, he was left stranded as Adam Duvall and Sean Murphy struck out to end the inning.

It was another good showing for Schwellenbach who would give way to Aaron Bummer in the eighth. Schwellenbach allowed three runs over seven innings and finished with 10 strikeouts. He retired the last 10 hitters he faced.

Bummer allowed a lead-off single to Edwards, but it would end up being his only base-runner as he struck-out two in his scoreless inning of work. The Braves’ offense got back to work in the home half of the eighth. Jarred Kelenic worked a leadoff walk and advanced to second on a bunt by Merrifield. Soler delivered a single to right that scored Kelenic and tied the game.

Atlanta wasn’t finished as Riley doubled off the bricks in right to put runners at second and third. Marcell Ozuna followed with a sacrifice fly to left that scored pinch-runner Ramon Laureano to give Atlanta the lead at 4-3. The Marlins intentionally walked Matt Olson and Arcia followed with a line drive single into center field, scoring Riley to increase the Braves’ lead at 5-3.

Joe Jimenez struck out the side in the ninth to seal the win.

With the win, Atlanta improves to 60-49 for the season. They have now won four-straight games and clinched the season series against Miami.
