Braves prospect Luis Guanipa promoted to Augusta

The second half of the minor league season is set to begin shortly, and we are getting a chance to watch an exciting group of Atlanta Braves prospects head out to Augusta for the remainder of the year. This group is headlined by Luis Guanipa, the Venezuelan outfielder who was Atlanta’s top international signee in 2023. The 18 year old Guanipa is hitting .282/.346/.451 in the FCL at the time of writing, notably cutting his strikeout and swing-and-miss significant since his 2023 Dominican Summer League stint.

Guanipa is one of the most electrifying athletes in the system, capable of producing double-plus run times as well as plus raw power with an explosive toolset. His bat speed jumps off of the table, and he has ranked in the top 10 by Battery Power since his signing. In terms of ceiling few, if any players in the system can match Guanipa’s, with it being a raw but potentially superstar-level talent. Guanipa appeared in the Braves spring breakout game and went 0-3.

Joining Guanipa in Augusta will be outfielder Junior Garcia and shortstop John Gil. Gil is similarly a highly-touted athlete, though he was a significantly lower profile signing last winter. Gil has hit .286/.403/.389 with three home runs in 51 games, and while he doesn’t yet produce the power that Guanipa does he has the body to grow into more strength. Gil has been notably for his incredible contact rates so far in Florida, and creates plenty of leverage in his swing to eventually hit for game power and potentially stick at shortstop with plus speed. Gil is expected to land inside our Top 30 midseason update.

Junior Garcia is (for me, personally) the third-best of the trio, but has had a fantastic season in the FCL and should be a borderline top 30 candidate. Garcia is hitting an impressive .317/.432/.446 this season, though his strikeout rate is close to 25% and he is running a .427 BABIP to support those numbers. Still, he has impressed for a player who just turned 19, and has a good blend of plate discipline and power with the potential to project to an average hit tool.
