After a brief two-game homestand, the Atlanta Braves will head back out on the road Friday where they will begin a three-game series against the New York Mets. Charlie Morton will get the start for Atlanta while New York will go with left-hander Jose Quintana.
The Braves responded after a 1-5 western road trip by sweeping a two-game series against the Boston Red Sox. Atlanta is 22-12 for the season and enter play Friday two full games behind the Philadelphia Phillies in the NL East. The Mets have won two straight and are 18-18 for the season.
Morton will make his seventh start of the season for the Braves in Friday’s opener. After a tough stretch to begin the season, Morton has pitched much better of late. He allowed two runs and struck out five in his last start against the Dodgers. Over his last three starts combined, he has allowed four runs in 19 innings while logging at least six innings in each. Morton faced the Mets back on April 8 and allowed four runs and struck out four in 5 2⁄3 innings.
The Mets made a late change to their rotation plans for the weekend. Left-hander Jose Quintana, who was scheduled to start Wednesday’s rainout in St. Louis, will start Friday’s opener opposite Morton. Quintana will be looking to bounce back from an early start last time out where he was tagged for 10 hits and eight runs in just 2 2⁄3 innings against the Rays. He faced the Braves back on April 11 at Truist Park where he allowed three runs over 5 1⁄3 innings.
The Braves made a couple of minor roster moves on Thursday’s off day. First, they traded infielder Luis Guillorme to the Los Angeles Angels in exchange for a player to be named later or cash. A few hours later, they announced that they had acquired infielder Zack Short from the Boston Red Sox in another cash deal. Short had been designated for assignment by the Red Sox during the series in Atlanta. Short joined the Braves in New York on Friday and will be on the active roster for the series opener.
First pitch for Friday’s game is scheduled for 7:10 p.m. ET and can be seen on Bally Sports Southeast.
