Atlanta Braves place Reynaldo López on the 15-day IL

Reynaldo López left last night’s game with what was called right shoulder tightness by the Atlanta Braves. Considering that he only lasted one inning against the Nationals last night, it sure seemed like bad news was on the way and sure enough, the bad news has come late Tuesday morning. The Braves have officially placed Reynaldo López on the 15-day IL with right shoulder inflammation.

While the Braves were at it, they brought up Daysbel Hernández from Triple-A, selected Cavan Biggio’s contract to the big league roster and sent Luke Williams back down to Gwinnett. Assuming everything goes well, this does leave the door open for Reynaldo López to return to the team for the final weekend of the season. We haven’t heard from the team yet what the official prognosis is for his injury but knowing how Atlanta’s injury luck has gone this season, I wouldn’t be holding my breath for good news in that regard.

As far as the other moves go, Daysbel Hernández is getting another crack at it after making a handful of appearances in may and June and a stint in a doubleheader back in July. Hernández hasn’t been as good at Gwinnett here in 2024 as he was last season but has only given up just one run over 11 innings while with the big league squad this season.

Meanwhile, Cavan Biggio will officially be suiting up for his third big league team this season after starting with the Blue Jays and playing a bit with the Dodgers. This is also his fourth organization this season after the Giants signed him but didn’t bring him up to their major league squad. No matter where he’s been, Biggio has not done well at the plate (he recorded 86 wRC+ for both the Blue Jays and Dodgers) and his defense has been average at bet, so it’s very likely that he’ll be simply serving as a bench player for the Braves while he’s here.

Either way, this is just yet another injury blow for the Braves in a season that’s been full of injury woes.
