Atlanta Braves acquire Cavan Biggio from Giants

The Atlanta Braves made a move tonight to bolster the team’s infield depth by acquiring veteran infielder Cavan Biggio from the San Francisco Giants for cash considerations.

Biggio began the season with the Toronto Blue Jays but the Braves will be his fourth organization of the 2024 season. He saw MLB action with the Los Angeles Dodgers after being traded to the team from the Blue Jays. The Dodgers released him after appearing in 30 games. He signed with the Giants on a minor league deal on August 23.

Biggio has struggled this season, hitting below .200 in 74 games with the Blue Jays and Dodgers. Biggio finished fifth in the American League Rookie of the Year vote in 2019 and followed his debut season up with a strong 2020 campaign. However, he struggled in 2021 and his last two season both saw him produce slightly below average offensive output.

He will add depth to a Braves infield that has lost Ozzie Albies and Austin Riley to injuries and will be without Whit Merrifield, who was signed six weeks ago, who suffered a broken foot in last night’s game. Biggio has experience at both second and third base. He has also spend some time in the outfield.

If Biggio joins Atlanta’s active roster he would not be eligible for the post-season, if Atlanta were to make it, since he was not in the Braves organization by September 1.

Cavan Biggio is the son of Hall of Fame player Craig Biggio.
