J’Mari Taylor is a player after my own heart. He began his career at North Carolina Central. For those of you who have never heard of the Eagles, they play in the HBCU MEAC conference. I myself am a graduate of two schools within this conference, having received my BA from Delaware State and my PhD from Morgan State. The conference has produced some really good NFL players over the years. Taylor took his MEAC success and spent one final season at UVA and shined. In fact, he played well enough to garner 1st Team All-ACC honors. You will find his career stats below.
You can see from his numbers above that, while his efficiency may have dipped slightly, he was more than up to the challenge of the ACC. His 15 combined scores are particularly impressive given his smaller stature. With that size issue in mind, I really liked seeing how he could be used in an expanded role as a pass catcher, bringing in over 40 grabs in his only season with the Cavaliers.

Rookie Profile | Strengths and Weaknesses
When I put on J’Mari Taylor’s film, the first thing I notice is his jump cuts. This player is on the smaller size for his position, but he has nevertheless done a fine job of carrying the rock between the tackles. He is patient, but when he spots the hole, he bounces to the opening in the line and sprints through the gap. The Cavaliers run a pro-style scheme, which will help him at the next level.
The way in which Taylor was utilized in the passing game at UVA was a definite plus. He wasn’t just told to run swing routes of the backfield and take dump-offs. He was actually lined up at WR in a number of plays. That will make him an asset at the NFL level and help boost his draft stock. It is no small feat to catch 43 passes in major college football.
Taylor isn’t the type of player who is going to blow past you with his speed, but he has enough to get to the edge and makes defenses pay if they don’t respect his long speed. Think sometime along the lines of a Bucky Irving, someone quicker than fast who, despite his smaller stature, can carry a heavy workload.
If there is a weakness to his game, it will surely be his smaller stature and lack of top-end speed. When you are dealing with a running back who is below 200 lbs, you want to see a little more juice, ideally. That doesn’t mean that he is slow, just t that he lacks the top-end gear that players like Jeremiyah Love possess.
J’Mari Taylor | All-22 Film Breakdown

You get to see every play they are in the game, do they try when they don’t get the ball, are they just a couple of big highlight players, or do they consistently succeed?
The game that I chose to break down for this article was his regular-season contest against eventual conference champion Duke. Taylor went off in that game, turning 18 carries into 133 yards and 2 scores. He also brought in a pass for a big 25-yard gain. He was one of the driving forces behind the UVA 34-17 victory.
The parts of his game that stand out to me are his ability to be shifty when he presses the line of scrimmage and his willingness to block passes. Early in this game, you see two really nice chip blocks when he reroutes the defender, and then presents himself as an open target to the QB. The second incident turns into a big gain in the passing game.
Due to his smaller overall size, he can get swallowed up by defenders at the line of scrimmage. Despite this limitation, he does an excellent job of falling forward when carrying the ball. On his long TD run, you can see both the adequate speed and the ability to see the cutback lane as he takes the outside pitch, buts back towards the hashes and is off to the races. Overall, this was a really impressive game. I saw many of the same types of moves and traits in the NC State film I watched as well. He was a big part of the UVA success in 2025, and it wasn’t hard to see why.
Draft Capital | Potential Landing Spots
The 2026 NFL draft class is overall pretty weak at the RB position. Outside of Jeremiyah Love, there aren’t a ton of players you can confidently say will go on Day 2 of the Draft. J’Mari Taylor will most likely not hear his name called that day either. I personally see Taylor as suited to be a role player in an NFL offense. Think of a player like Devin Singletary. He can help shoulder the load for an NFL team, but they will always be looking for someone more explosive to handle a lion’s share of the carries.
I could see Taylor being a Day 3 pick for a team like the Green Bay Packers, Indianapolis Colts, or Atlanta Falcons. Teams with an established starting RB that want to pair said starter with a player who will keep them fresh and take some of those carries off their legs. He is most likely to hear his name called between rounds 5-7 of the NFL draft. That would be an excellent accomplishment for a player out of the MEAC with only one year of Power Five conference football to his name. For dynasty purposes, we are looking at a very late round dart throw to have on your bench in case the starter in front of him goes down with injury.
