Rookie Profile | Strengths and Weaknesses
Ja’Kobi Lane is often talked about as the other USC rookie wide receiver when referring to this draft class, as his teammate Makai Lemon has received most of the praise. If you have not read my Makai Lemon Rookie Profile breakdown, please do so. At 6’4”, Lane possesses more prototypical size than Lemon. Lane has the basketball player build gives him a massive catch radius, making him a red-zone threat, allowing him to high-point the football and go up and over defenders to make contested catches. His size and frame allow him to shield defenders effectively and create throwing lanes that weren’t there before contact. His size also allows him to play on the outside as an X receiver or play inside as a big slot.
Like all prospects, Lane does have some weaknesses in his game. Lane does not offer much in yards after the catch. He is not a dynamic player with the ball in his hands and lacks elite game speed. While his big frame has a lot of upside, it limits his ability to handle press defenders. Physical defenders can get their hands on Lane and divert him off of his initial release, but that area can improve with proper coaching and technique. In terms of player comparisons, Lane has been linked most often to Keon Coleman. That could be a low-end comp for Lane, but Lane displays better hands and body awareness in contested catches. I see more similarities between Lane’s game and Courtland Sutton’s.

In the Northwestern game, Lane’s contested catch skills were on full display. At the 6:05 mark, Lane uses his frame to box out the defender while jumping in the air, making a one-handed contested catch.

Draft Capital | Potential Landing Spots
As it stands today, Ja’Kobi Lane is my WR12 in this class, and I have him as a 2nd round draft pick in the NFL Draft as well as in your fantasy drafts. Last week, over on our new Dynasty Nerds sub channel, Draft Nerds, Jagger May selected Lane with the 2.03. In terms of NFL landing spots, fellow Dynasty Nerd Bobby Bishop just released his NFL Mock Draft 3.0, where he projects Lane to go to the Atlanta Falcons in the second round. Lane and Drake London would give the Falcons two legitimate red zone options and a nightmare for defenses.
