Damian Lillard Returns to Weber State in New Front Office Role

Lillard (8)

Damian Lillard is adding a new title to his résumé, general manager of Weber State men’s basketball.

The seven-time All-Star becomes the latest NBA player to take on a ceremonial GM role at his alma mater, joining names like Stephen Curry at Davidson, Trae Young at Oklahoma, Patty Mills at Saint Mary’s and Terance Mann at Florida State.

But Lillard insists he wants this to be more than just a figurehead position.

“It’s something that, my relationship with coach [Eric] Duft and this program means a lot to me, and seeing the success of the program means a lot to me,” Lillard said at Weber State’s annual alumni game, according to The Ogden Standard-Examiner. “I feel like I can do a lot to help the program be successful, to help the players even individually continue to grow their careers past college, that’s something that I’m passionate about….

“All of the resources that I have, I’ve got an opportunity to be able to create for the program, while they’re in the program and even after the program, it’s something I’m excited about. I’m looking forward to doing that work, looking forward to continue to lift up the university, lift up the program. It’s going to be fun.”

Weber State is coming off a 12-22 season, though the Wildcats have put together multiple 20-win campaigns in recent years. It has been a decade since they last reached the NCAA Tournament. Lillard, who carried the program to March Madness back in 2012, now wants to help ensure the next generation has the support needed to compete at the highest level.
