Rodgers specifically pointed to improvement in Nussmeier’s decision-making and the team’s red zone efficiency. In 2024, the Tigers only scored a touchdown on 57 percent of their red zone drives, which was 14th (out of 16) in the SEC.
“It’s because Nussmeier was forcing throws into tight windows when things weren’t there,” Rodgers said. “So, if the decision-making, as it did with Jayden Daniels, catches up to the talent, look out because this kid is as good as it gets.”
Nussmeier may not be the first name that comes to mind for most fans, but his results thus far certainly suggest a player that could be primed for a strong season.
According to FanDuel, Nussmeier currently has the second-best odds (+800) to win the Heisman Trophy, only behind Texas QB Arch Manning, and ahead of Clemson QB Cade Klubnik and Ohio State WR Jeremiah Smith.
Nussmeier passed for 4,052 yards last season, which was the second-most in a season in program history and fifth in FBS, per Sports-Reference. In fact, each of the four players he trailed on that list (Kyle McCord, Cam Ward, Jaxson Dart, Shedeur Sanders) are now in the NFL.
Experience is definitely on Nussmeier’s side as well. He is entering his fifth year of eligibility, but only his second as a starter in Baton Rouge. In his first season as a starter in 2024, he completed 64.2 percent of his passes and accounted for 29 TDs. His 12 interceptions were concerning, but if the decision-making improves, that will likely get better if Nussmeier takes what the defense gives him.
The biggest thing Nussmeier carries with him into 2025 is how the 2024 season played out. LSU finished the season 9-4, but lost three games in a row to No. 14 Texas A&M, No. 11 Alabama and Florida. Those tough lessons in conference play are ones that Nussmeier believes will help him this season.
Nussmeier and LSU will have a challenge to start the season with a showdown against Clemson in Week 1. The road will not be easy, but there is a lot to like about Nussmeier as he looks to lead LSU back to the top.
