Detroit Pistons guard Malik Beasley is reportedly the subject of a federal investigation involving gambling activity connected to NBA games and prop bets, according to ESPN.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office has launched a probe, though no formal charges have been filed against the 28-year-old NBA veteran at this stage.
“An investigation is not a charge,” Beasley’s attorney Steve Haney told ESPN. “Malik is afforded the same right of the presumption of innocence as anyone else under the U.S. Constitution. As of now, he has not been charged with anything.”
The full scope of the allegations remains unclear, and further details have not yet been made public.
When contacted for comment, NBA spokesperson Mike Bass said, “We are cooperating with the federal prosecutors’ investigation,” via Fox News.
The Detroit Pistons acknowledged the investigation but have chosen not to comment further, instead deferring to the league.
Beasley joined the Pistons ahead of the 2024-25 season and went on to play in all 82 games, starting 18 of them. He averaged 16.3 points and 2.6 rebounds per game in his debut campaign with the team. Following news of the investigation, ESPN reported that ongoing contract extension talks between Beasley and Detroit have been paused.
The sharpshooting guard has spent nine seasons in the NBA, previously suiting up for the Denver Nuggets, Minnesota Timberwolves, Utah Jazz, Los Angeles Lakers, and Milwaukee Bucks.
Beasley was last seen on the court during Detroit’s March 30 matchup against the Timberwolves at Target Center and earlier that month against Miami on March 19.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Michigan has not yet released an official statement.
