The New York Giants entered Sunday in desperate need of a redemption game after their season opener. They would travel to play their division rival, Washington Commanders, in a game of 0-1 teams.
The Giants targeted rookie Malik Nabers early and often. The sixth overall pick had a great game and hauled in his first career touchdown. The offense looked miles better than they did in Week 1. However, there is clearly plenty that Brian Daboll’s offense will have to work on moving forward.
Kicker Graham Gano was the big headline as he was injured coming in to the game and did not play following the opening kickoff which hindered the Giants plans to kick field goals and extra points throughout the entire game.
On defense, the Giants had a tough time slowing down the Commanders offense all game long but were able to stop them once they got to the redzone throughout the entire game. Washington was not forced to punt once throughout the game’s entirety.
The Giants came up short on their final drive in a crucial ourth-down drop by Malik Nabers, giving the Commanders a shot on their final drive where they drove down the field and would kick a field goal as time expired.
Following the loss, the Giants will drop to 0-2. Here’s how X reacted.
Losing because you don’t have an active healthy kicker is 100% on the coaching staff. Even more egregious in this case with Gano injured all week. Crazy.

If the Giants lose this one, it’s hard not to put this on the decision to not bring in another kicker after Gano landed on the injury report yesterday. This is deja vu from last year when they sent him out to kick with a bad knee and we all saw how that turned out.

I’ve covered a lot of losses.
This was probably the most-predictable way to lose that I’ve seen. As soon as Graham Gano popped up on injury report Saturday, you had a bad feeling.
Remember, #Giants left at least 3 (maybe 6) points off board.
Could’ve gone up 4 instead of 3…

This is a 21-15 game if Brian Daboll doesn’t screw up kicking depth for the second year in a row
— Justin Penik (@JustinPenik) September 15, 2024
Nope. Daboll gotta go. It’s unfortunate bcuz I liked him for years but it ultimately falls on him. The DC YOU hired couldn’t get a single stop today. Not one. Washington didn’t punt once.

This is about to turn to a nightmare smh

A lazy L by the #Giants who went into it w/ an injured kicker, lost him first play & couldn’t kick an XP or late-game FG to take a lead.
Nabers had a brutal drop, but w/o him accounting for 71% of receiving yards, most YAC, there is no game to begin with.
Defense forced 0 punts.— Dan Schneier (@DanSchneierNFL) September 15, 2024
Washington 21, Giants 18- FINAL
The Commanders did not punt today
Strong chance there will be a new regime in New York in 2025

Lost without giving up a touchdown lmaoo. CLEAN HOUSE
— Mr. Chicken (@5on_it) September 15, 2024
More “calculated risks” blow up in the #Giants face. The team was aware that their 37-year old kicker had a groin issue.
They decide not to add a kicker and take the “risk.” He gets hurt on the opening kick-off, and the #Giants play the game without a kicker.
One would think…

Commanders drives today:
Field goal
Field goal
Field goal
One kneel down to end first half
Field goal

I’ll say this, This defense is criminal.
— Mace The Flip Flopper ???? (@realmaceblack) September 15, 2024
Commanders 21, Giants 18. Giants are 0-2.
Not having a contingency at kicker cost them dearly.
— Jordan Raanan (@JordanRaanan) September 15, 2024
I refuse to blame Malik Nabers for this game. He was the ENTIRE offense. He did everything he could, the game shouldn’t have come down to a 4th down reception by Nabers with the game he had.
— Monte (@MONTECRI5TO) September 15, 2024
Not having a back up kicker & your defense not being able to stop nose bleed. This season is JUST getting started. Giants have The Browns, Cowboys, Seahawks, Bengals, Eagles & Steelers coming up. Alot top defense & I don’t see a single win. It’s about to get real fucking muddy…
— Mace The Flip Flopper ???? (@realmaceblack) September 15, 2024
Graham Gano was added to the injury report long before this game. We saw what happened last year when Gano tried to play through an injury. For Brian Daboll not to have a legitimate backup kicker on the roster today is inexcusable.

Good teams find ways to win
Bad teams find ways to lose
Thew New York Giants are a bad football team and it starts with Joe Schoen and Brian Daboll
— Marshall Green (@MarshallGreen_) September 15, 2024
If the #Giants had just planned to have a HEALTHY kicker (literally the only thing needed to have won Week 2) I could’ve found some silver lining in the Vikings looking so good & not as easy of a matchup as predicted. But 0-2 is a tough pill to swallow w/ the upcoming schedule.
— Dan Schneier (@DanSchneierNFL) September 15, 2024
We all said a lot of crappy things about Daniel Jones this week, frankly much of it deserved.
Daboll screwing this kicker situation and that Nabers drop likely costs this team a win today.
Can’t blame Jones, that’s a heck of a game today after that kind of mental warfare
— Shaun Morash (@ShaunMorash) September 15, 2024
Washington picked up a kicker off the street and he went 7/7
Daboll started Gano even though he was injured. Cost us the game
He should have learned after last season#Giants100
— el Jefé (@JefePil) September 15, 2024
This loss is 100% on Schoen and Daboll, trotted out an injured kicker with no BACKUP PLAN.
You can’t defend this decision from any angle when they don’t even have a full 53 man roster #Giants100
— Zain (@ThisIsNotZain) September 15, 2024
The #Giants are the most disabled malfunctioned injury riddled team ever. And I am completely embarrassed to be a fan of the New York Football Giants. This is such a shame. 100 years to celebrate. And this happens. Great. Just great. And they don’t even care.
— G-Man (@gmand16) September 15, 2024
Go figure, the Giants probably win this one with a healthy Gano. Oh well.
Definitely a better effort than the first outing, but this is a *deep* hole to climb out of with this team and schedule. #giants #Commanders
— Jared Lerner (@jared531) September 15, 2024
It would be nice if the Giants could get off the field on a 3rd and 14 at least once. The redzone defense was good… But how about not letting them reach the redzone on every single drive.
