Braves reinstate Reynaldo Lopez from injured list, option Jimmy Herget to Gwinnett

The Atlanta Braves were dealt a crushing blow Monday when an MRI exam revealed that Austin Riley will miss the next six to eight weeks with a fractured right hand. The Braves also announced that Reynaldo Lopez has been reinstated from the 15-day injured list. Lopez will start Tuesday’s series opener against the Philadelphia Phillies. Reliever Jimmy Herget was optioned to Gwinnett to open up a spot on the active roster.

Lopez experienced soreness in his forearm during a start against the New York Mets on July 28. An MRI exam came back clean but the Braves opted to shut him down and placed him on the 15-day injured list. Lopez made one rehab start at Gwinnett last week and Brian Snitker confirmed after Sunday’s game in Anaheim that Lopez would rejoin the rotation for Tuesday’s game.

Herget had been serving as an extra arm for the bullpen. He’s appeared in eight games this season, mostly in mop up duty, and has a 4.38 ERA and a 3.57 FIP in 12 13 innings.
