MLB Trade Deadline: Braves acquiring outfielder Jorge Soler and reliever Luke Jackson

The Atlanta Braves have acquired outfielder Jorge Soler in an attempt to bolster one of the league’s worst and most injury-depleted outfields, according to a report from ESPN’s Jeff Passan. The team is also adding reliever Luke Jackson, adds Robert Murray of FanSided.

The cost was minimal: Tyler Matzek and minor league infielder Sabin Ceballos. Darius Vines was also designated for assignment to make room on the 40-man roster. A tip of the cap to Matzek for everything he did for the organization.

The Braves officially announced the deal late Monday night.

It’s like it’s 2021 all over again.

Soler, 32, is enjoying another strong season offensively with a .240/.330/.419 line and 116 wRC+ over 93 games with the Giants. Over the last month, Soler’s been one of the National League’s better hitters with a .292/.400/.528 line.

Soler was even better on the whole in 2023, posting a 126 wRC+ and 36 homers with the Marlins. Soler should provide a significant boost to a lineup that has been a train wreck since the end of April.

Defensively, there are questions everywhere on the fit. Soler has not played a single inning in the field in 2024 and was mostly a DH with Miami last season. That is a lot to ask for someone who will presumably be playing every night.

Soler is under contract for the next two seasons, owed $13 million per year. The Giants are not sending any money to cover his contract, making it a pure salary dump on their end. Luke Jackson has a $7 million club option for 2025.

The Braves also added old friend Luke Jackson to help reinforce the bullpen. Jackson is having a poor season overall, so the Braves will hope for a bounce back in the final two months.

More to come…
