Huascar Ynoa to begin rehab assignment

The long road back continues for Atlanta Braves right-hander Huascar Ynoa who is set to begin a rehab assignment with the FCL Braves. (H/T Matt Chrietzberg of Outfield Fly Rule) Ynoa missed all of the 2023 season while recovering from Tommy John surgery.

The Braves had hoped that Ynoa would be without restriction entering Spring Training but that wasn’t the case and he made just one appearance during the Grapefruit League. He began the season with Gwinnett and made three appearances where he allowed 11 hits and seven runs in 9 23 innings before going back on the injured list. He reportedly showed diminished velocity in those three appearances.

Atlanta should have some options after the All-Star break when it comes to the rotation. AJ Smith-Shawver is working his way back from an oblique injury and should be ready to go soon. Ian Anderson is also currently on a rehab assignment after Tommy John surgery and could be an option at some point in the second half.

At this juncture, it probably isn’ smart to count on getting anything from Ynoa at the major league level this season, but it’s good that he will soon be back pitching in games.
