Introducing Cam Caminiti

If Cam Caminiti sounds familiar to you that would be because the still 17-year-old left-handed pitcher from Saguaro HS in Arizona is the cousin of the late MVP and former Brave Ken Caminiti. Cam is a pitcher and many see him as the best prep arm in this draft class. He’s a projectable 6’2”, 195-pound LSU commit with a plus fastball that has peaked at 98 MPH. The fastball isn’t his only pitch as he also has swing and miss offerings with the slider and potentially the change, and he has a solid curve. Command also projects as an average tool as he doesn’t have a ton of trouble throwing strikes.

First Reaction

The Braves love pitching, and they have to be excited to have the top prep pitcher slide to them at 24th. Caminiti was seen as a top 15 prospect in this draft, and Atlanta has been trying for years to slide a similar sort of talent down this low in the draft. It is a weak draft overall, but no one can be disappointed with this outcome for Atlanta. He will likely fit as one of the top six to eight prospects in this system, and is one of the best value picks Atlanta has landed in years. It is certainly a riskier pick than typical, but Caminiti’s deep arsenal and athleticism is exciting.
