Braves recall Dylan Lee, activate Brian Anderson and option AJ Smith-Shawver in a flurry of roster moves

The Atlanta Braves announced several roster moves in advance of Wednesday’s matchup against the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Braves recalled lefty reliever Dylan Lee from Gwinnett and reinstated Brian Anderson from the 10-day injured list. To make room on the active roster, Atlanta optioned right-hander AJ Smith-Shawver and placed outfielder Ramon Laureano on the injured list with a left oblique strain.

Lee was optioned to Gwinnett on Monday to clear a spot for Bryce Elder who made a spot start in the series opener. He was only eligible to return because of Laureano going on the injured list. Lee has appeared in 28 games and has a 2.00 ERA in 36 innings but was the only pitcher in the bullpen who had options and was available to be sent down.

It was a short stay on the active roster for Smith-Shawver who took Elder’s place on the roster Tuesday to provide a multi-inning option out of the bullpen. He is still working his way back from an oblique injury and will continue to build up through the All-Star break.

It looked like Laureano had a regular spot in the lineup carved out but hasn’t played since June 26 in St. Louis. The original report was that Laureano was dealing with a sore back, but was placed on the injured list with an oblique strain. The move is backdated to July 9. Laureano has appeared in 11 games with the Braves and was 9-for-35 at the plate with four doubles and a home run.

Anderson went on the injured list on June 25 due to a lower body infection. He appeared in three games with Gwinnett while on a rehab assignment and was 0-for-10 at the plate with a pair of walks. He appeared in three games with the Braves before the injury and was hitless in five plate appearances.
