Braves place Hurston Waldrep on 15-day injured list, recall Daysbel Hernandez

The Atlanta Braves announced multiple roster moves ahead of Monday’s series opener against the Detroit Tigers. The team placed pitching prospect Hurston Waldrep on the 15-day injured list with inflammation in his elbow and recalled reliever Daysbel Hernandez. The team also recalled outfielder Forrest Wall and optioned J.P. Martinez back to Gwinnett.

The move with Waldrep comes as a surprise. Waldrep struggled Sunday in his second career major league start and Brian Snitker told reporters after the game that he was being sent down. MLB.com’s Mark Bowman reports that after he was told he was being sent down, Waldrep told the training staff that his elbow soreness was more than normal which resulted in him being placed on the injured list.

Hernandez was optioned on June 9 and wouldn’t have been eligible to return if not for an injury. He’s appeared in three games at the major league level this season and has allowed four hits, two walks and an unearned run in three innings.

The Braves are also swapping out outfielders with Martinez going down in favor of Wall. Martinez appeared in seven games and was 2-for-10 at the plate. Wall made the Opening Day roster and spent the first few weeks of the season on the bench. He was optioned to Gwinnett on April 19 having appeared in two games while logging one plate appearance. He’s played well at Gwinnett though since being sent down posting a 117 wRC+ in 201 plate appearances.
