Over the offseason, the Draybay community takes part in an exercise in which we compile a list of 30 prospects in the Rays system based on popular vote.
Now that the 2024 season has concluded, we can look back at these rankings and see how each individual player performed.

21. Ian Seymour
Ian Seymour has been a battler throughout his entire career. Stemming from his days at Virginia Tech where he fought his way into being one of the best starting pitchers in the University’s history to his injury plagued time within the Rays organization. Never possessing a dazzling arsenal, Seymour is able to make it work through grit and determination. Entering the 2024 season, Seymour was still working on regaining the tools he had prior to undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2022.

Seymour returned from Tommy John surgery on June 29, and got a slow start with a Complex and Low-A placement at couple-inning stints, but the Rays strategy proved successful. He was able to string together 13 starts across four levels, and locked it down each step of the way. If you remove his injured 2022, Seymour has a career 1.76 ERA. Like fellow org. southpaw Mason Montgomery, he’s a deception-lefty with a violent arm action, but unlike Montgomery he trades the plus slider for a plus change up with 10 mph separation. The over the top delivery has an awful head jerk (video), and accordingly gives the traditional mind a reliever projection, but if it works it works?
How it Went
Everything went right for Seymour during the 2024 campaign and he ended the year on the cusp of reaching the Major Leagues. After carving through Double-A lineups with relative ease for the first half of the season, Seymour received a promotion to Triple-A. Over 54 IP in Triple-A, Seymour nearly replicated all of his Double-A success (although with a much higher FIP). Seymour actually led the minor leagues (min. 120 IP) in ERA and was among the league leaders in most other categories.
