Now that the 2024 season has concluded, we can look back at these rankings and see how each individual player performed.
We have already covered
We resume the reviews at #20.
20. Tre’ Morgan
Tre’ Morgan received national attention for his defensive play during the 2023 College World Series; the Rays would select him in the 3rd round of the 2023 draft. Known for stellar defense (70-grade tool per Baseball America), scouts aren’t expecting much offense from Morgan. However, he was an offensive dynamo in his brief taste as a professional, hitting .389/.500/.472 over 44 PA in Single-A.
Before the Season
21 | BT: L/L | 6’ 0” | 215
Rk-A | .396/.482/.542 (1.024 OPS, 182 wRC+ in A) 56 PA, 1 HR, 4 SB
Three-year LSU first baseman Morgan was taken by the Rays in the third round of 2023 after winning the CWS, marking what looks like a great draft class on offense for Tampa Bay. He’s a strong defender at first baseman who can hit and hit consistently, even if it’s without commanding power thus far. If his swing follows his physical maturity, he could show 15 HR pop in an outfield role, but following his current trajectory as a slap hitting 1B with an elite glove, it sure sounds like a Rays first baseman.
How it Went
It’s hard to find any faults in Tre’ Morgan’s 2024 campaign. The now 22-year old surged through three levels, ending the year in Double-A. Morgan displayed his Gold Glove caliber defense at first base. He showcased an elite ability to make contact, and was selection to showoff this ability in the first ever Futures’ Game skill competition. He developed some surprising power. Overall, from a tools standpoint, Morgan might just be the best prospect in the Rays system.
